Common leafy veg (callaloo/pak choi) pests and diseases

Flea Beetles

Tiny, jumping beetles that chew numerous small holes in the leaves of seedlings and leafy greens.

Signs to look for
  • Leaves look like they have been shot with a tiny shotgun
  • Small, shiny, black jumping beetles
  • Seedlings may be completely destroyed
What to do: Use row covers. Apply Sevin (Carbaryl), Neem Oil, or Spinosad. Keep garden free of weeds.

Armyworms

Voracious caterpillars that travel in large groups (armies), consuming massive amounts of foliage.

Signs to look for
  • Skeletonized or completely eaten leaves
  • Large amounts of frass on the ground or in leaf whorls
  • Large caterpillars feeding primarily at night
What to do: Apply Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) or Spinosad. Spray late in the afternoon or evening when they are active.

Leaf Spot

A general fungal/bacterial issue (Cercospora, Septoria) causing spotted damage on foliage.

Signs to look for
  • Small brown or black circular spots on leaves
  • Spots may have a yellow halo or ash-gray center
  • Lower leaves affected first and drop off
What to do: Apply Copper or Mancozeb. Avoid overhead watering. Ensure adequate plant spacing for airflow.

White Rust

An oomycete disease commonly affecting leafy greens like Callaloo and Pak Choi.

Signs to look for
  • White, chalky, blister-like pustules on leaf undersides
  • Yellow spots on the upper leaf surface directly above the pustules
  • Distorted leaf growth
What to do: Destroy infected leaves. Apply protectant fungicides like Mancozeb. Ensure good drainage and air circulation.
