Common sweet pepper pests and diseases

Pepper Weevil

The most destructive pepper insect pest. Larvae feed inside the fruit.

Signs to look for
  • Premature dropping of buds and young fruit
  • Small puncture holes in fruit
  • Rotting and internal feeding damage
What to do: Collect and destroy all fallen fruit. Apply broad-spectrum insecticides (e.g., Vydate, Actara) during flowering.

Thrips

Tiny, slender insects that rasp plant tissue and suck the sap. Major vectors for viruses.

Signs to look for
  • Silvery, stippled scarring on leaves
  • Tiny black specks of frass
  • Distorted flowers and scarred fruit
What to do: Apply Spinosad, Abamectin, or Imidacloprid. Use blue sticky traps for monitoring.

Anthracnose

A fungal disease thriving in warm, humid conditions causing destructive lesions on leaves and fruit.

Signs to look for
  • Sunken, dark circular lesions on fruit
  • Pinkish spore masses in lesions during wet weather
  • Leaf spotting and dropping
What to do: Apply preventative fungicides (Mancozeb, Azoxystrobin). Improve airflow and avoid overhead watering.

Phytophthora Root Rot

A soil-borne water mold causing rapid wilting and collapse of plants in poorly drained soils.

Signs to look for
  • Sudden wilting despite moist soil
  • Dark brown to black decayed roots
  • Dark lesion girdling the stem base
What to do: Improve drainage. Apply Metalaxyl/Mefenoxam as a soil drench. Avoid overwatering.

Blossom End Rot

A physiological disorder caused by a lack of calcium reaching the fruit, usually triggered by inconsistent watering.

Signs to look for
  • Large, leathery, sunken black patch on the bottom of the fruit
  • Fruit ripens prematurely
What to do: Maintain consistent soil moisture. Apply Calcium Nitrate via fertigation. Do not over-apply Nitrogen.

Mosaic Viruses

A complex of viruses causing mottled leaves and stunting, typically vectored by aphids or mechanical transmission.

Signs to look for
  • Mottled light/dark green patches
  • Stunted growth
  • Distorted fruit shape
What to do: Control aphid populations. Remove infected plants. Do not handle wet plants.

Feeding sweet pepper by growth stage

StageNutritionWhy
SeedlingHigh Phosphorus starterFeed starter solution to build a robust root structure. Keep soil warm and damp.
VegetativeBalanced NPK (e.g. 20-20-20) + MicronutrientsEnsure bush development to shade future fruit from sunscald. Maintain moisture.
FloweringPhosphorus and Calcium boostAvoid nitrogen spikes which drop flowers. Apply calcium foliar sprays to prevent blossom end rot.
FruitingHigh Potassium (e.g. 15-5-35)Sustain continuous fruiting. Apply potassium for thick walls and vibrant green/red color.

Questions growers ask

What are the most common sweet pepper pests and diseases in Jamaica?

The problems growers report most often are Pepper Weevil, Thrips, Anthracnose, Phytophthora Root Rot, Blossom End Rot, Mosaic Viruses. Each one is described above with the symptoms to look for and the recommended response.

What soil pH does sweet pepper need?

Sweet Pepper performs best in soil with a pH between 6 and 6.8. Outside that range nutrients become progressively less available to the plant even when they are present in the soil.

How long does sweet pepper take to grow?

Counting from transplant, the seedling stage runs to about day 14, vegetative growth to about day 45, and flowering to about day 70, after which the crop moves into fruiting or bulking.
