Common cucumber pests and diseases

Downy Mildew

A water mold causing severe foliar blighting, thriving in cool, damp, humid conditions.

Signs to look for
  • Angular yellow spots on upper leaf surface
  • Purplish-gray fuzz on the underside of leaves
  • Rapid leaf browning and death
What to do: Use resistant varieties. Apply specialized fungicides (e.g., Zampro, Revus). Do not water from above late in the day.

Powdery Mildew

A common fungal disease covering leaves in a white powder. Thrives in high humidity but does not require leaf wetness.

Signs to look for
  • White powdery fungal growth on upper leaf surfaces
  • Leaves may turn yellow and drop prematurely
  • Stunted growth and poor fruit quality
What to do: Apply Sulfur, Potassium Bicarbonate, or systemic fungicides (e.g., Bellis, Topas).

Aphids

Sap-sucking insects that multiply rapidly, causing stunting and vectoring deadly viruses.

Signs to look for
  • Curled, yellowing leaves
  • Sticky honeydew residue on lower leaves
  • Sooty mold growing on the honeydew
What to do: Apply Neem Oil, Insecticidal Soap, or Imidacloprid for severe infestations. Encourage ladybugs.

Melon Worms

Caterpillars that defoliate cucurbits and frequently scar the rind of the fruit.

Signs to look for
  • Severe defoliation of leaves
  • Scraping and scarring on the surface of melons
  • Green caterpillars with two white lateral stripes
What to do: Apply Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) or contact insecticides (Karate, Malathion).

Questions growers ask

What are the most common cucumber pests and diseases in Jamaica?

The problems growers report most often are Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Aphids, Melon Worms. Each one is described above with the symptoms to look for and the recommended response.

What soil pH does cucumber need?

Cucumber performs best in soil with a pH between 6 and 6.8. Outside that range nutrients become progressively less available to the plant even when they are present in the soil.

How long does cucumber take to grow?

Counting from transplant, the seedling stage runs to about day 10, vegetative growth to about day 30, and flowering to about day 40, after which the crop moves into fruiting or bulking.
