Common herbs (thyme/scallion) pests and diseases

Leaf Miners

Small fly larvae that tunnel between the upper and lower epidermis of leaves.

Signs to look for
  • Winding, white, serpentine trails on the leaves
  • Premature leaf drop in severe cases
  • Reduced photosynthetic area
What to do: Apply systemic insecticides (Abamectin, Spinosad) which penetrate the leaf surface. Use yellow sticky traps for adult flies.

Thrips

Tiny, slender insects that rasp plant tissue and suck the sap. Major vectors for viruses.

Signs to look for
  • Silvery, stippled scarring on leaves
  • Tiny black specks of frass
  • Distorted flowers and scarred fruit
What to do: Apply Spinosad, Abamectin, or Imidacloprid. Use blue sticky traps for monitoring.

Root Rot

A general term for decay of roots caused by soil-borne fungi (Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Phytophthora) in waterlogged conditions.

Signs to look for
  • Yellowing and wilting of the whole plant
  • Brown, mushy, or slimy roots
  • Plant collapses suddenly
What to do: Improve soil drainage immediately. Stop watering. Apply soil drenches like Metalaxyl or Fosetyl-Al if caught early.

Questions growers ask

What are the most common herbs (thyme/scallion) pests and diseases in Jamaica?

The problems growers report most often are Leaf Miners, Thrips, Root Rot. Each one is described above with the symptoms to look for and the recommended response.

What soil pH does herbs (thyme/scallion) need?
