Common coffee pests and diseases

Coffee Berry Borer (CBB)

The most devastating pest of coffee worldwide. The beetle bores into the berry to reproduce.

Signs to look for
  • Small pinholes at the tip of the coffee berry
  • Berries drop prematurely
  • Beans inside are destroyed by larval feeding
What to do: Strict sanitation (strip harvesting). Use Broca traps with alcohol lures. Apply Beauveria bassiana.

Coffee Leaf Rust (ROYA)

The most economically important coffee disease, causing massive defoliation.

Signs to look for
  • Pale yellow spots on upper leaf surfaces
  • Orange, powdery spore masses on the underside
  • Severe defoliation leading to dieback
What to do: Apply Copper-based fungicides preventatively. Ensure proper pruning for light penetration.

Coffee Leaf Miner

Moth larvae that tunnel inside coffee leaves, reducing photosynthetic area.

Signs to look for
  • Irregular, brown necrotic blotches on leaves
  • Peeling the blotch reveals tiny white larvae
  • Severe defoliation in dry periods
What to do: Apply systemic insecticides (Imidacloprid) or contact sprays (Chlorpyrifos) if economic thresholds are exceeded.

Feeding coffee by growth stage

StageNutritionWhy

VegetativeBalanced NPK (e.g. 20-20-20)Push vigorous green branch growth for future cherry bearing.
FloweringHigh Boron and ZincApply foliar micronutrients to support blossom set and prevent drop.
FruitingHigh Potassium (e.g. 15-5-20)Maximize cherry sizing and bean density.

Questions growers ask

What are the most common coffee pests and diseases in Jamaica?

The problems growers report most often are Coffee Berry Borer (CBB), Coffee Leaf Rust (ROYA), Coffee Leaf Miner. Each one is described above with the symptoms to look for and the recommended response.

What soil pH does coffee need?

Coffee performs best in soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Outside that range nutrients become progressively less available to the plant even when they are present in the soil.

How long does coffee take to grow?

Counting from transplant, the seedling stage runs to about day 60, vegetative growth to about day 180, and flowering to about day 240, after which the crop moves into fruiting or bulking.
